Buffy vs Accountants...

For the first time in a long time, I'm reading a book that I'm not really enjoying... 'Night Pleasures' by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

Why did I borrow it from the library? Cos there were loads of the 'Dark Hunter' books on the 'vampire' bookshelf, and I figured that they must be ok if there were so many in the series, and the blurb on the front said a cross between 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Sex In The City', which I thought could be an interesting combo.

In fact, the book has a lot more in common with the heaving breathless heroines of trashy romantic novels, who want to be swept off their feet by the handsome hero, play hard to get for a short while, but eventually get married and no doubt have children and live happily ever after.

There is a bit of Buffy and Angel thrown in, ie vampires/demons who get 'dusted' with sharp objects/weapons and also some Greek god mythology stuff mixed in for good measure.

But these interesting bits are thinly glossed over and are overwhelmed and stifled by all the romantic stuff which appears on practically every page. Ok, there's also some rude bits but it's written in such a way that it's laughable, rather than steamy!

I don't like starting a book and not finishing it (have only done this once as far as I can remember) so I will persevere but I just have to post some of the writing that's had me staring open-mouthed in astonishment that I'm wasting my time reading this pap:

"He felt her hands clutching the lapels of his coat. Felt her fear for him, and it scorched his wounded heart with pure bliss." Blah blah blah...

"She'd been kissed more times than she could count, but no man had ever made her feel the way he did." Blah blah blah...

"He looked as if he could devour her, and in truth, she wanted to be devoured by him. Completely. Utterly." Good grief...

"Amanda tasted him in a way she'd never tasted any man before." Marmite-flavoured?

And my favourite line so far...

"He was a Dark-Hunter and she was an accountant. There had never been two more mismatched people born." Yep, you gotta beware of accountants obviously, they're a funny old breed...

Hopefully, I'll finish the book over the next couple of days, maybe even tomorrow if I'm up to some torturous reading - glutton for punishment I am!

  1. That has got to be the weirdest line, Dark-Hunter and accountant. I haven't read one of those books in a long time. Reading your post about clutching lapels and tasting marmite men is making me want to grab a Harlequin romance and snuggle up to a body pillow. haha

  2. Well, with a huge sigh of relief, I've finished it and I was right. The last few pages show them getting married with impending offspring on the way...

  3. I've read a few of them.. Talk about formulaic!
Every single one is exactly the same! I guess she figures, if it sells... just keep writing the same thing.

  4. Why do accountants make good lovers?

    They're great with figures.
