In A Galaxy Far Far Away…

Last night's 'gig' at the Manchester Arena was rather different from the norm.

Yep, I went to see 'Star Wars in Concert'.

I agree, when I first heard of if, I thought "how's that going to work?" but if you're a fan of the Star Wars saga, then you will know how important John Williams' musical score is.

Never witnessed a full live orchestra before so was kinda overwhelmed by the Royal Philharmonic orchestra (plus choir) playing great pieces of familiar music to specially edited scenes from the six movies, all shown on a large HD screen. Epic!

Live narration by Anthony Daniels (C3PO) in full thespian mode provided engaging storyline in between the musical pieces, some of which left me with moist eyes or the hairs rising on the back of my head.

There were displays of costumes, plus some actors dressed as Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, Chewie etc - too many people milling about or I would have had my pic taken too with them!

I know Star Wars isn't everyone's cup of tea, indeed some colleagues scoffed when I told them about it but I've been brought up on Star Wars, it's part of my culture and if you strip away the 'galaxy far far away' bit, it's just a story of good vs bad. Hell, Luke finding out who his father is and later that Leia is his sister is positively Jeremy Kyle, more true to life than many seem to think!

For once, no touts outside the arena asking to buy or sell tickets, no dodgy t-shirts for sale on the pavements, no girls in tutus - all very civilised!

I think Boom would have enjoyed this, had he been able to go :-( Anyway, I took the boss, who's a big SW fan, so I guess I got some brownie points there.

  1. Wish I could have seen that. It was in Glasgow last week and I know one person who went - and she hated it as she doesn't like sci-fi.

Wah! Tickets were too expensive for me to get one for myself :(

Mind you, I'd have left during the bits focussing on the "crap" trilogy.

  2. I would have loved to go.The concert came to Houston but we had the kids and couldn't afford the tickets anyway. I did see Lord of the Rings in concert a few years back and really enjoyed that.

  3. The tickets weren't cheap at £50 each but definitely worth it. I would have been kicking myself if I'd missed out!
