Kinda like a diary of sorts for a gal who refuses to grow up but who's old enough to know better, likes her beach holidays, beer, gin, WoW, music, working out, reading, footie and nerdy, geeky sci-fi stuff...

Fifty
Yep, that's it - just 50 days to go til Christmas! It's hard, but I can't shake off my 'bah-humbug' attitude to it all right now.
Came across this from Grans on Bran - seems quite apt.
It seems the older I get the less I get into the holiday spirit.
I think it's because we don't get to see our grandchildren very much. Their excitement is contagious, and I'm not being exposed to that joyful anticipation any more.
I read through the Buy Nothing Christmas 05 post, and found it very though provoking. Thanks for mentioning it.
I don't know if you celebrate Sinterklaas, but this saint is celebrated on continental Europe.
Somewhere in time the USA imported this festive date and his name got changed to Santa Claus (see the similarity?). Only problem was that it was too close to Thanksgiving, so they pushed the date to Christmas.
Europe imported Santa Claus back over here, and people never realized they were actually celebrating the same person twice.
Oh! Some people celebrate the birth of some dude on that day. It was the vatican that decided to use this pagan date as a catholic festivity to get people to convert more easily.
In the end, there is nothing to celebrate really. Wow, this is one the longest comments I've ever written. :)
Hehe, I've just read a couple of Dan Brown books and learnt more about the 25th December being a pagan date! Apparently, it's said that the image of God is based on the non-Christian god Zeus. Quite interesting stuff really.
when my local Tesco several weeks ago had an aisle with Christmas goodies down one side and barbecues down the other, I figured it was starting a *bit* early...

ReplyDeleteI still really like Xmas but I refuse to have anything to do with it until December.
ReplyDeleteC'mon. Christmas rocks. Don't you get that toasty warm feeling all over every time you hear Bing Crosby?
