Sweet FA

The FA Cup final this weekend was certainly not one of the greatest. In fact, for most of the 90 mins, and then through extra time, it was very dull. One side did all the attacking, the other did all the defending.

For the first time, the final was decided on a penalty shootout and unless you've had your head buried in the sand, you'll know that Arsenal won and Manchester United lost (Paul Scholes' penalty was saved by the Gooners' keeper, Jens Lehmann, who had a great game) - this means United win absolutely nothing this season [...trying very hard not to smile here...]

To be fair, United were by far the better team - they had a goal which was deemed to be offside and therefore disallowed, they pushed forward and peppered the Arsenal goal constantly. Players such as Ronaldo and Rooney were always threatening but unfortunately the goals didn't come.

In contrast, it was obvious that the Gooners were sorely missing their star striker and talisman Thierry Henry, with Dennis Bergkamp proving to be ineffective as a lone striker and the rest of the Arsenal team were just acting as defenders. I don't think they had a shot on goal...maybe one.

Tactically, it was Wenger 1, Ferguson 0 - Wenger wasn't interested in playing watchable football, his aim was to stifle United, and he succeeded. He must have been really confident that his men would do the business in a penalty shootout and they certainly did.

There's a more important final taking place on Wednesday night - I sincerely hope it will be a lot more entertaining that the one we've just witnessed.

  1. I only caught the second half, but I thought it was, for a nil-nil draw, quite a good game. I did feel a bit sorry for Man Utd though, maybe because I don't like Arsenal.
