The Carling Cup - not the greatest of the English trophy competitions, hence the reason why a very young and inexperienced Liverpool team were fielded to play in last night's game. Their opponents, Tottenham Hotspur fielded their strongest team - they obviously thought this competition vital to their hopes of qualifying into Europe next year.
Full-time and the young guns of Liverpool held Spurs to a goalless draw. Deep into extra-time, Spurs went ahead with a Defoe goal. Liverpool's hopes seemed dashed, until in the dying minutes, they were awarded a penalty, when a Spurs player was judged to have handled the ball. The Reds equalised.
Penalty Shootout!
I was listening to this game live on the radio - the tension was so unbearable that I had my hands partially over my ears.
In the end, Liverpool triumphed and now meet Watford in the semi-finals. The other semi-finalists? Chelsea vs Man United - hehe!
