Washed Out On The Promenade

It was deffo not the best time to go to Blackpool - first day of the school half-term holiday, pouring with rain, still 3 days to go til pay day.

But hey, I'd promised my 16 year old cousin I'd take him so that's how me, him and his friend ended up getting soaked and blown about on the wind and rain swept Blackpool promenade.

The renowned 'Pleasure Beach' is looking pretty jaded these days, or perhaps it was just the rain that made it look that way. The arcades, which once housed the latest and top of the range games, were mostly full of slot machines and only one or two of the newer games.

The rides all looked a bit rickety, so fortunately, the boys said they weren't interested in going on any. The only 'attraction' that looked impressive was the Pasaje del Terror, some kind of interactive house of horror. However, as I didn't want to be embarrassed in front of two teenage boys by screaming like some scared silly cow, I quickly steered them away.

It was not a cheap day - £8 for parking, £10 spent in the arcades, £28 in Pizza Hut... ok, may not sound much to you but for someone who's been counting their pennies for the last couple of weeks it's a lot...I hope I've stayed within my overdraft limit...

We left with some sticks of Blackpool rock and the obligatory cuddly toy won from one of those grabber machines so it wasn't a bad day.

  1. I went to Blackpool for the first time this summer. Ohhh boy. How the town managed to escape without a single vote in the recent "worst towns in the UK" survey I will never know (it was "won" by Luton, with my own Nottingham coming in 8th)

I went to go to a Morrissey gig - and good though the concert was, it was worth the hassle of the trip just for the moment when 3000 fey Moz fans poured out of the Empress Ballroom and into downtown Blackpool at closing time on a saturday night.

    Talk about clash of cultures!

I also loved the vending machines selling £1 "lace" "sexy" body suits. mmmmm. nice.

  2. Nottingham was 8th? I've been there a few times and thought it was...nice! Although perhaps I was viewing the place thru beer goggles!
