His heart was set on returning to Anfield but in the end, money paved the way as always.
Newcastle offered Real Madrid £17 million.
Liverpool were unlikely to offer more than the £8 million they sold him for.
Will Owen's goals (and he will score many) save the Toon Army from a dire season and help Souness keep his job? Perhaps.
There's still a chance we could have a u-turn by midnight 31st August a la Steven Gerrard, but I'm not holding my breath! :(
Surely he can't be that stupid to sign for a team who haven't won fuckall in the past 50+ years, after leaving pool in search of trophies and medals!! I'm sure he has some sorta clause in his contract which would enable him to leave for cheap if newcastle don't sort themselves out
