"Worked" my lunch so was able to leave early at 4.30pm. Parked my car up at my parents' then my mate picked me up and we got a taxi into town.
Wow! What a journey down memory lane! Went to "The Best Disco In Town" gig at the MEN and it was a blast! We got there a little late - went to eat at Henry J Beans and then walked to the MEN from the Printworks - I could hear Boney M singing...oh no, they had started on time. Got to our seats just as they started belting out 'Brown Girl In The Ring' and they finished off with the stupendous 'Rivers of Babylon'. As far as I could see, only one original member of the group was present.
Next were The Three Degrees, minus Sheila Ferguson but with another lady in her place. Aw - they looked sweet, middle-aged ladies in glittery dresses. But their songs - fantastic! 'My Simple Heart', 'Woman In Love', 'Giving Up Giving In' and the number one hit 'When Will I See You Again'.
Didn't recognise the names The Emotions or Evelyn King, although I did vaguely recall a couple of the songs they sang. Candi Staton was a very small woman with a huge voice - great stuff, with her song 'You Got The Love' the highlight of her performance.
The Pointer Sisters(featuring two sisters and one other) were great, with 'I’m So Excited', 'Jump (For My Love)', and Slow Hand being the top songs in their stint.
Chic (featuring Nile Rogers) were the closing and supposedly the main act. I disagree - for me, the main act were The Three Degrees! What disappointed me about Chic was that I was not convinced that their band was actually playing their instruments live, as were the previous bands on before them. Certainly, their keyboard player was 'playing' when you could hear a piano in the background, but sometimes just busy dancing, so who then was playing the piano??? 'Freak Out' is a great disco tune but it was a bit of a let down at the end of an entertaining night that lasted 3 hours!
Bumped into some friends I hadn't seen in ages and they dropped me off at my parents' , whilst the others stayed out. Chatted to sis and mate (who were pissed on wine) and was home by 1am.
